Launched in 1957, the Ref. 5500, with its various customisations and dial configurations, could be identified by various names, from Air King to Explorer to Metropolitan and even Everest, without forgetting the customised models for companies, which generally gave them as gifts to their best employees and have now become, like all dials with double personalisation, the most sought-after by collectors. They could bear, for example, the inscriptions Coca-Cola, Dominos Pizza or Winn Dixie.
The ref. 5500 has a smaller case than the more popular Explorer ref.1016 and is Rolex's longest-lived model, in production from 1963 to 1989.
